Volume adjustments for tango music

There was some discussion on the tangodj mailing list about the use of Replay Gain for tango music. I have used it for several years, and found it to be immensely useful. As you can see from the histogram above, the loudness of cd releases varies a lot, and Replay Gain makes automatic adjustments to make the loundess more or less the same. It does a lot better than I do, that’s for sure, and frees up time for the more interesting parts of the djing.

Now, the reason to create this histogram was to show what range of adjustment Replay Gain will lead to in general. This is based on more than 5000 tracks, old and new, from my collection of tango music, all in flac format. As you can see, almost all tracks are attenuated. The ones that are not, are generally very silent tracks like tracks with someone talking etc. So there is little reason to be afraid of introducing clipping due to the use of Replay Gain for the tango dj.
